A mass shooting at the Tops Friendly Markets grocery store on Jefferson Avenue in Buffalo, New York, on the afternoon of Saturday, May 14, 2022, left ten people dead and injured three others.
The gunman, 18-year-old Payton Gendron of Conklin, New York, was dressed in military-style gear, including body armor and a helmet, and livestreamed his attack on social media site Twitch. He was arrested by police at the scene and later charged with first degree murder.
Authorities described the attack as racially-motivated, saying the white teenager deliberately targeted the supermarket located in a predominantly-black neighborhood of Buffalo. Of the 13 people shot, 11 were black and two were white, and investigators linked Gendron to a 180-page document, previously posted online, containing extreme racist material and plans to commit a mass shooting.
