What castle was used as Winterfell in Game of Thrones?

Last updated June 12, 2020 by ZagBot Comment

Parts of Doune Castle in Stirlingshire, Central Scotland were used during filming of the unaired pilot episode of Game of Thrones to depict Winterfell, home of the Stark family.

Very few scenes from Doune ultimately made it into broadcast episodes as the commissioned series was filmed in other locations, including Castle Ward and soundstages in Northern Ireland.

Doune Castle was also a filming location for Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and Outlander.
