How did Libe Slope get its name?

Last updated November 9, 2020 by ZagBot Comment

Cornell University’s Libe Slope is a shortened form of the name Library Slope, so named for the library built at the top of the grassy incline.

Cornell’s University Library, nicknamed ‘The Libe’, opened in 1891 and was the main library until 1961, after which it was renamed the Uris Library.

Libe Slope’s green space is the location of the annual Slope Day celebration held each May on the Thursday after the final day of regular undergraduate classes. The event features live music and catered food and beverages.
