Which airport is EWR?

Last updated December 15, 2021 by ZagBot Comment

EWR is the IATA code for Newark Liberty International Airport, located 3 miles (or 4.8 kilometers) south of downtown Newark, New Jersey, and 9 miles (or 14 kilometers) west of Manhattan.

Although it is in the state of New Jersey, its proximity to New York City makes it is one of the three major airports serving the New York metropolitan area, the others being New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport,

In 2001’s September 11 attacks, United Airlines Flight 93 from Newark to San Francisco was hijacked by terrorists and crashed as passengers and crew tried to regain control of the aircraft. Liberty was added to the airport’s name in 2002 as a tribute to the victims of the attacks, inspired by the Statue of Liberty which can be seen by passengers taking off and landing at the airport.

The EWR code is derived from the airport’s name, as NEW is already assigned to New Orleans Lakefront Airport, and all other three-letter identifiers beginning with the letter N are assigned exclusively by the US Department of the Navy, for its use.
