The first store to scan a product barcode at the checkout was the Marsh supermarket in Troy, Ohio, on June 26th, 1974.
Marsh executive Clyde Dawson made a trial purchase of a selection of groceries, the first of which was a 10-pack of Wrigleys Juicy Fruit gum, scanned by cashier Sharon Buchanan.
The Marsh store closed in 2017 and the location reopened as a liquor store.
