Where was Bank Street football ground?

Last updated September 24, 2021 by ZagBot Comment

Bank Street football ground, also known as Bank Lane, was located in the Clayton area of east Manchester on the site where the National Indoor BMX Arena now stands, next to the Manchester Velodrome.

Between 1893 and 1910, Bank Street was the home ground of Manchester United Football Club (which was known as Newton Heath Football Club until 1902), before the team moved 4.5 miles (or 7.2 kilometers) away to its Old Trafford ground, where Manchester United still plays today.

A plaque on the house at 38 Bank Street, opposite the old gound’s location, reads:

OPPOSITE THIS PLAQUE WAS THE
BANK STREET GROUND
HOME OF
MANCHESTER UNITED
FORMERLY NEWTON HEATH F.C.
1893 – 1910
