Duke University is located in Durham, North Carolina, while its Marine Laboratory is based some 170 miles to the southeast of the main campus, on Pivers Island, near Beaufort, North Carolina.
It relocated to Durham in 1892, when it was known as Trinity College, in a move funded by local tobacco magnates Washington Duke and Julian S Carr.
In 1924, Washington Duke’s son, James Buchanan Duke, established the Duke Endowment, which funded the construction of a new campus. In recognition of the contribution, the institution changed its name name to Duke University in honor of the late Washington Duke.
