Coney Island is located on a peninsula at the southwestern tip of the borough of Brooklyn, New York City, some 13 miles (or 21 kilometers) south of midtown Manhattan.
The area was once truly an island, originally being the westernmost of the several, smaller, Outer Barrier islands on the southern shore of Long Island, and separated from the rest of Long Island by Coney Island Creek. Silting and landfill saw the islands gradually become connected, and by the early 20th century, filling in of the creek resulted in the present peninsular landform.
On the subway, Coney Island can be reached from Manhattan by taking the D, Q, N or F train to Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station.
