A marble statue of Christopher Columbus stands on a granite column in the center of Columbus Circle in Manhattan.
The monument, created by Italian sculptor Gaetano Russo, is 76 feet (or 23 meters) tall and features bronze reliefs of ships on the column and an angel holding a globe on the base pedestal.
The monument was ceremonially unveiled on October 13th, 1892, as part of New York City’s celebrations marking the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ landing in the Americas. There is another bronze statue of Columbus in nearby Central Park.
