What happened to River Phoenix?

Last updated October 30, 2021 by ZagBot Comment

American actor and musician River Phoenix died, aged 23, in the early hours of October 31st, 1993, at The Viper Room nightclub on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, California.

He stopped at the club on the evening before his death to perform with the band P, and reportedly became unwell after taking cocaine and heroin at the venue. He collapsed outside The Viper Room with convulsions and went into cardiac arrest.

Phoenix was taken by ambulance to LA’s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at 1:51 am local time. An autopsy determined the cause of death to be acute multiple drug intoxication.
