What do the digital numbers mean in Union Square?

Last updated May 24, 2020 by ZagBot Comment

The fifteen digit clock on the building facade above Best Buy at 1 Union Square South in New York measures the time from midnight and the time remaining in the day as follows:

  • From the left side the first seven digits show the time in 24-hour format as hours, minutes, seconds and tenths of a second.
  • The last seven digits, from right to left, display the time remaining in the day as hours, minutes, seconds and tenths of a second.
  • The eighth digit in the center represents hundredths of a second.

For example, if the clock shows 120510911495411, the time is 12:05 and 10.9 seconds, and there are 11 hours, 54 minutes, and 49.1 seconds left in the day.

The clock display is called The Passage and is part of larger art installation on the building, called Metronome by Kristin Jones and Andrew Ginzel.
