What caused Colin McRae's helicopter crash?

Last updated November 28, 2020 by ZagBot Comment

The cause of the helicopter crash that killed 39-year-old Scottish rally driver Colin McRae on the afternoon of 15th September 2007 was not positively determined.

McRae was piloting his Eurocopter AS350B2 Squirrel helicopter, registered G-CBHL, when it crashed at high speed in a wooded valley next to his home, Jerviswood House, north of Lanark, some 150 metres from the intended landing point, where a helicopter pad and hangar were situated. It was concluded that McRae had unnecessarily undertaken a demanding, high-speed, low-level turning manoeuvre in the heavily wooded valley, subjecting the helicopter and its occupants to an increased risk.

The accident also killed the three other passengers on board, including Colin McRae’s five-year-old son, Johnny, and his friend aged six years.
