Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University is a public HBCU located in Tallahasee, Florida, also known as Florida A&M University or shortened to FAMU.
The HBCU designation, an acronym for Historically Black Colleges and Universities, is given by the US Department of Education to an accredited college or university established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of Black Americans.
FAMU was founded in 1887 as the State Normal College for Colored Students, and in 1953 the Florida legislature elevated the college to university status. Over 80% of its enrolled student population is black.
