Sixteen men died during the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge between 1923 and 1932.
Seven were employed on the bridge structure itself, of whom two died falling from the bridge, seven worked at associated workshops, and two died in accidents at the rock quarries in Moraya supplying granite for the bridge pylons. Many more workers were left with injuries and lifelong illnesses as a result of working on the bridge’s construction.
On the 75th anniversary of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in March 2007, a plaque was unveiled near the entrance to the South-East Pylon Lookout by New South Wales Premier Morris Iemma to honour the workers killed in its construction.
