Since joining the NHL in 1979, the Edmonton Oilers have won the Stanley Cup five times, in the 1983–84, 1984–85, 1986–87, 1987–88, and 1989–90 seasons.
Wayne Gretzky captained the Oilers to the first four Stanley Cup victories, before he was traded to the LA Kings during the 1988 off-season. Mark Messier was captain of the team for their last Stanley Cup victory.
At the time, the Oilers played at Edmonton’s Northlands Coliseum (later called Rexall Place), and their run of success between 1983 and 1990, during which they made six of their seven total Stanley Cup Final appearances, led to the era’s team being accorded dynasty status by the Hockey Hall of Fame.
