Between portals, the north tube of the Holland Tunnel, carrying westbound traffic under the Hudson River from Lower Manhattan to Jersey City, is 8,558 feet (or 2,608 meters) long. The south tube, for eastbound traffic leaving New York, is shorter at 8,371 feet (or 2,551 meters) in length.
The two tubes of the tunnel run broadly parallel to each other, some 15 feet (or 4.6 meters) apart, and the roadway reaches a maximum depth under the Hudson River of 93.4 feet or (28.5 meters) below mean high water.
The tunnel is tolled in the direction of New York City and operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
