To reach Rockland Breakwater in Rockland, Maine, follow Main Street / US Route 1 north of Rockland, turning onto Waldo Avenue at the ‘Breakwater Lighthouse’ sign, and then right onto Samoset Road, continuing to the end where there is a small parking area. A short trail leads from there through Marie H Reed Breakwater Park to the start of the breakwater.
The 0.9-mile- (or 1.4-kilometer-) long breakwater is capped with rectangular granite blocks, providing a reasonably flat walking surface to reach Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse at the tip of the breakwater.
Built between 1881 and 1899 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers to create a safe harbor for marine vessels, Rockland Breakwater was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.
