The Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team originated in Brooklyn, New York, where they were known as the Brooklyn Dodgers until 1958 when they relocated to LA.
During the Brooklyn era, one of the team’s nicknames was the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers, a reference to Brooklyn’s burgeoning number of electric trolley cars in the 1890s and the tricky business of dodging them when crossing the street.
The name gradually stuck, becoming shortened to just the Dodgers, and other than being known as the Brooklyn Robins between 1914 and 1931, the name has endured to this day.
