How did Peekskill get its name?

Last updated December 16, 2022 by ZagBot Comment

Peekskill, New York, is derived from a nearby creek named after Jan Peeck, a 17th-century Dutch settler in New Amsterdam. The name is derived from a combination of Peeck’s surname and kil, a Dutch word for a water channel or creek.

In the mid-1600s, Peeck was known to travel by boat up the Hudson River and established a trading post in the area where he would deal in furs and other goods with local inhabitants.
